Xiaomi Mi Soundbar review: Powerful sound, crazy affordable

Xiaomi Mi Soundbar review: Powerful sound, crazy affordable

When you don’t have a good budget, it’s far from easy to set up a home theater-like experience. Now we have a soundbar which promises to create a home theatre-like experience at half the cost. A soundbar that can boost your TV audio to a large extent without needing a separate box in the corner.
Xiaomi, known for its Redmi smartphones and Mi TVs, has introduced just that, but not at the Rs 10,000 price point we would expect for such a product. The Mi Soundbar is well tailored to undercut the competition and deliver a surround sound experience, but at just Rs 4,999. Clean looks, booming sound, multiple functions and everything else you might need at a really competitive price.
Here is our detailed review of Xiaomi Mi Soundbar.
Xiaomi Mi Soundbar price in India: Rs 4,999

Xiaomi Mi Soundbar review: Look and feel, connectivity

A lot of stress has put in designing the Mi Soundbar and it shows. The design is definitely minimal and pleasing. The bar easily blends with interiors of your living room, or bedroom. It’s a good looking unit, although available only in white, as it is wrapped in a mesh fabric which covers the front of the bar.

Xiaomi Mi Soundbar review: Performance

The Mi Soundbar features eight drivers – two 20mm dome speakers to ensure a wide spread of audio, two 2.5” woofers to give the extra bass and four passive radiators.
So what does it sound like? Is it better than other soundbars? Speaking of which: I am not an audiophile and haven’t even owned a soundbar ever. This is my first real exposure to a soundbar. That being said, I was really impressed by the audio quality. To test the bar’s performance, I watched Andhadhun over the weekend. Based on my experience, the system’s real strength is definitely its booming bass, which packs a real punch. In fact, I did not notice any real distortion even high volumes. Initially, I wasn’t sure whether it would be able to create an engulfing surround sound experience, but the Mi Soundbar proved me wrong.

Xiaomi Mi Soundbar review: Conclusion

At Rs 4,999, Xiaomi’s Mi Soundbar really impresses. My verdict is not entirely based on its competitive pricing as it’s performance is also good. The Mi Soundbar can make you feel like you are sitting in a cinema hall and that is the biggest win in my opinion. It’s hard not to recommend the Mi Soundbar at this price. Use it with TV, or play music via Bluetooth, it’s got everything covered.

iPad mini 5, New Affordable iPad Set to Launch in First Half of 2019: Report

iPad mini 5 and a new entry-level iPad model are set to debut in the first half of this year, according to a report from Taiwan. The Cupertino company has been highly anticipated to upgrade the iPad mini 4 for a long time, as that model was launched back in September 2015. Similarly, the company hasn't refreshed its entry-level iPad lineup with new models, though it brought some iterations of the iPad Pro in the recent past - with the most recent upgrades debuted in October last year.
Citing people familiar with the development, Digitimes reports that Apple is in plans to launch two entry-level iPad models in the first half of this year, including the iPad mini 5 and an entry-level iPad model. It is also said that touch panel manufacturers General Interface Solution (GIS) and TPK Holding are already gearing up for the launch.
Specifications and features of the upcoming iPad models aren't reported this time. However, a past rumour suggested that the iPad mini 5 could sport a vertically stacked dual camera setup and include a headphone jack.
Last year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the iPad mini 5 could arrive at Apple's Spring event this year. The new model is believed to have an upgraded processor from the previous iPad mini model and an affordable display panel.
To recall, Apple unveiled the iPad mini 4back in September 2015 with a 7.9-inch 2048x1536 pixels display and the second-generation A8 SoC.
The latest report by Digitimes corroborates what was reported by China Times last month. The China Times report mentioned that there will be a successor to the 9.7-inch iPad (2018) with narrower bezels with the screen size increased to 10-inch. This might be the new affordable iPad model.
Apple hasn't yet revealed any details around its new iPad launch. Nevertheless, the company generally hosts an event either in March or April to refresh its iPad lineup. It is, therefore, safe to expect the iPad mini 5 alongside the all-new affordable iPad model in the coming months.

Railways Links Locomotives via ISRO Satellites to Automatically Feed Train Status

January 17, 2019 0

Railways Links Locomotives via ISRO Satellites to Automatically Feed Train Status

Good news for train passengers: the Indian Railways has linked its locomotives via ISRO satellites, making it easy to track trains and automatically feed the control charts about trains' arrival and departure, officials said.
"A new beginning has been made in the new year: the train movement information is acquired and fed to the control charts using ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) satellite-based real-time train information system (RTIS) automatically," a senior railway ministry official told IANS.
The official said that the system was implemented on January 8, on some of the mail or express trains on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Bandra Terminus, New Delhi-Patna, New Delhi-Amritsar and Delhi-Jammu routes.
The official said the new system will help railways to modernise its control room, railway network for more efficient train movement across its network.
The official said, "The move is aimed at further improving the accuracy of train-running information."
Explaining how the new system works, the official said the RTIS device installed in the locomotive detects position and speed of the train using GAGAN geo-positioning system, developed by ISRO.
"Based on this information and application logic, the device sends the train movement updates (arrival/departure/run through/unscheduled stoppages and mid-section updates) to central location server in the CRIS data centre using S-band Mobile Satallite Service (MSS) of ISRO," he said.
After processing in the CLS, this information is relayed to Control Office Application (COA) system for automatic plotting of control charts without any manual intervention in the divisions," he said.
The official said that earlier, the train running status used to be updated manually.
"Before this techniques was developed by the CRIS (Centre for Railway Information System) in collabration with ISRO, the divisional controls setup for the purpose of train movement control were dependent on the information relayed by the station master to the station controller and the data was fed in the control chart by the section controller manually," he said.
He said the COA is being already integrated with National Train Enquiry System (NTES).
The official said the railways is also working with the ISRO to use its satellite-based system to check accidents at unmanned railway crossings and track train movements.
Earlier while Working on a pilot project with ISRO, the railways installed space agency-developed integrated circuit (IC) chips on some train locomotives.
"The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System was used to warn road users of approaching trains through hooters installed at unmanned road crossings," the official said, adding that now the railways has also eliminated all the unmanned level crossing except one in Uttar Pradesh due to some local issues.

Oppo Showcases 10x Hybrid Optical Zoom Camera, In-Display Fingerprint Sensor With Larger Active Area

Oppo Showcases 10x Hybrid Optical Zoom Camera, In-Display Fingerprint Sensor With Larger Active Area

Oppo on Wednesday teased its new 10x optical zoom camera technology at an event in China. The company didn't reveal a smartphone using the technology or demo it at the event, but it did promise to share more details at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC). The 10x hybrid optical zoom technology builds up on the company's 5x hybrid optical zoom system that was unveiled at MWC 2017, but never appeared in a commercial device. Additionally, the company also announced a new in-display fingerprint sensor that will allow the phone to read two fingerprints simultaneously.
As promised, Oppo earlier today offered a sneak peek at its upcoming 10x hybrid optical zoom technology at an event. The new technology is capable of offering the equivalent to 15.9mm to 159mm focal length. According to the company, it is using a triple camera setup in the new technology, instead of the dual camera setup in 5x hybrid optical zoom tech. The new setup includes an ultrawide-angle camera, a primary camera, and a third camera with periscope style setup for the telephoto action. Basically, the new setup starts with an ultra-wide perspective and zooms in to medium telephoto. The company claims all three cameras will seamlessly transition from 1x to 10x optical zoom. Like the last time round, there is optical image stabilisation in the primary camera and periscope setup to make sure the consumers don't end up with blurry shots.
Oppo notes that three camera setup makes sure the overall camera module is not very thick and can fit in a regular smartphone. The company also revealed that the setup is now ready for mass production but didn't specify when we will see it in an actual smartphone. Oppo did promise to demo the 10x hybrid optical zoom tech at MWC later this month.
Additionally, the Chinese manufacturer also unveiled a new in-display fingerprint sensor at the event. The company claims that it has been able to expand the active area of the sensor by about 15 times of the existing solutions and the new sensor can read two fingerprints simultaneously. This will enable the company to implement dual-fingerprint scanning to increase the overall security. The new in-display fingerprint sensor will be included in the phones this year, the company noted.
